Can I surcharge an ACH payment?
No. Surcharging applies to credit card payments only. ACH payments cannot be surcharged.
Can I surcharge a debit card?
No. Sertifi automatically detects whether the card submitted is a credit or debit card. If a guest uses a debit card, the surcharge will not be applied — even if the payment request has surcharging enabled.
Can I charge a surcharge higher than my processing fee?
No. The surcharge is designed to recover processing costs only. Sertifi will not impose a surcharge greater than your actual processing fee. For example, if your processing fee is 3%, your surcharge cannot exceed 3%.
Do I have to surcharge every payment?
No. Surcharging can be toggled on or off for each individual payment request during the sending process. You can send multiple scheduled payments in the same folder with some surcharged and some not.
Can I refund a surcharged payment?
Yes. When refunding a surcharged payment, you should refund the surcharge amount as well. Per Visa's guidelines, if you accepted a surcharge on a transaction, the surcharge must be included in any refund.
Can I clone a surcharged payment?
Yes, with the following rules:
- If the original payment had surcharging applied, the cloned payment will also be surcharged.
- If the original payment did not have surcharging applied, the clone will not be surcharged. To add surcharging to a cloned payment, you will need to create a new payment request instead.
What scenarios should I not apply a surcharge?
- Tax-exempt organizations (nonprofits, schools, government agencies)
- US federal government entities — these may never be surcharged
- Any transaction where your property has chosen to waive the surcharge as a business decision (this is at each property's discretion)
Where do I see my processing fees per transaction?
Go to Reports > Sertifi Pay Batch Settlement Report (Surcharging) from your portal home page. Set your date range to see a full breakdown of processing fees per transaction.
Are processing fees billed monthly?
No. Processing fees are deducted per transaction, not billed monthly.
Does surcharging work with Classic portals?
No. Surcharging is only available on Next Gen portals using Sertifi Pay (Stripe).
